Categories of Personal Care
Assistance with Bathing, Grooming, and Dressing
As we age, self-care can become challenging. Loss of dexterity may make brushing hair difficult, while arthritis can make buttoning a shirt painful. For those with dementia, remembering hygiene basics can be a struggle. These challenges can impact independence and self-esteem.
Acti-Kare’s care professionals offer regular assistance with these tasks, bringing relief to many seniors. Our help with dressing can enable clients to leave home and engage in enjoyable activities. Assistance with bathing can improve mood, sleep, and overall comfort. We focus on maintaining independence, dignity, and comfort in all our care services.
Mobility, Ambulation, and Transfer Assistance
For clients with mobility issues, moving around the home can be challenging and potentially dangerous. Acti-Kare’s experienced caregivers are well-versed in body mechanics principles and can safely assist with standing, walking, positioning, and transfers.
As we age, all bones become more susceptible to fractures. Wrists and spines are particularly vulnerable. Our elderly clients face risks during everyday movements like getting in and out of bed or the bath. Acti-Kare professionals are trained in using transfer assistance devices, such as gait belts, to safely move clients. This proper assistance minimizes injury risks, giving our clients confidence to navigate their homes safely.
Incontinence & Toileting Assistance
Acti-Kare’s responsive care professionals are trained to provide sensitive and private assistance with urinary and bowel care. We understand that incontinence is common among the elderly and can lead to various physical and psychological complications. Our experienced senior care professionals work with clients to manage their condition, whether temporary or permanent, while preserving their self-esteem and dignity.
We also recognize that many elderly individuals who aren’t incontinent may still need toileting assistance. This could involve helping those with limited mobility reach the toilet or providing reminders for those with dementia. After a thorough needs assessment, our care professionals develop personalized plans for optimal toileting and peri-care assistance.
Support with Range-Of-Motion Exercises
Range-of-motion exercises are crucial for pain relief, especially for elderly clients with arthritis. While keeping affected joints in a bent position may provide temporary comfort, it can lead to permanent mobility loss if maintained for too long.
These exercises offer numerous benefits:
- Increasing muscle flexibility and strength
- Maintaining normal joint movement
- Strengthening bone and cartilage tissue
- Improving endurance and cardiovascular fitness
While our Acti-Kare professionals don’t replace therapists, they can support clients in performing physician-prescribed exercises. Regular movement, even simple exercises done consistently, can significantly improve quality of life. As we age and potentially lose bone density, weight-bearing exercises can help maintain it.
Acti-Kare care staff do not prescribe exercises. We understand that these recommendations must come from the client’s physician or therapist. However, we work closely with these professionals to ensure prescribed exercises are practiced regularly.
