At Acti-Kare, we have the privilege of supporting remarkable individuals, each with their unique story. This month, we’re honored to spotlight Navy veteran and lifelong fisherman Marcus, whose life has been defined by his deep love for the sea, commitment to service, and unwavering zest for life.
Marcus’ journey began in the Navy, where he dedicated years to working on tugboats and serving in orthopedic surgery—a field demanding both precision and compassion. But his service at sea was more than just duty; it sparked a lifelong passion.
Following his military career, Marcus embarked on a thrilling new chapter, fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional fisherman. He spent decades chasing king salmon and cod from Dutch Harbor to the icy waters of the Bering Sea. Marcus fondly recalls one extraordinary trip when he caught enough salmon to fill his living room.
While Marcus’ adventures at sea brought impressive catches—including hauling in over 3 million pounds of king crab during fall seasons—it’s the friendships forged aboard ship that he treasures most. His crew became like family, with lifelong friends from as far back as 1979 still regularly visiting his home in Arlington to swap tales of their escapades, such as the unforgettable day they ‘borrowed’ a plane.
These days, Marcus enjoys time spent woodworking or caring for his property, where even a mountain lion once made a surprise appearance. Rain or shine, he remains active and grateful. When asked what happiness means to him, Marcus responds with a bright smile, “Waking up every morning! I’m always happy when I get to get up in the morning.” It’s this genuine appreciation for life that inspires everyone around him.
For Marcus, family always comes first. Reflecting on his life’s journey, his most significant lesson is beautifully simple: “Love is the most important.” Our Acti-Kare caregivers deeply appreciate Marcus’ infectious gratitude and vibrant spirit, finding joy in supporting him to live independently in his home.
Marcus’ advice to younger generations is heartfelt and practical: “If you’re going to work, do something you love. That’s why I made fishing my career.”
From Navy scrubs to king crab fishing, Marcus has charted an adventurous and meaningful life—and he wouldn’t trade it for anything. At Acti-Kare, providing exceptional senior and veteran home care services to incredible individuals like Marcus is an honor we embrace wholeheartedly. Stories like his remind us every day of our mission: to help seniors maintain their independence and continue enjoying life on their own terms.
