When you meet DeAnne, one of the first things you’ll notice is her radiant smile and the unmistakable sparkle in her eyes when she talks about helping others. Ask her to tell you a little about herself, and she’ll light up—not about accolades or achievements, but about her time spent volunteering and spreading joy to those around her.
“Life Is Supposed to Be Enjoyed”
Whether she’s lifting spirits at local organizations, sharing kind words with strangers, or bringing her optimism into every room she enters, DeAnne is the kind of person who always finds the good. “Life is supposed to be enjoyed,” she says. “So do your best—and enjoy it.” It’s not just advice; it’s how she lives every day.
Service and Skilled Work
DeAnne’s journey has taken her through unique chapters—from her six years in the U.S. Air Force (following the footsteps of her father and other family members who’ve served in almost every branch of the military) to roles in hands-on trades like painting and concrete work. She reflects on each job with genuine joy, sharing stories of tasks she found especially fun and how every experience shaped her in a positive way.
“Never Say Never”
A motto she holds close is “never say never,” and it defines her approach to life. “I never thought I would be in a wheelchair,” she shares honestly, “but I’m excelling.” And excelling she is—both in spirit and in action.
A Competitive Spirit
DeAnne is an avid athlete, regularly participating in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games and competing in sports such as air rifle, boccia, table tennis, disc golf, and curling, which she recently picked up just for fun. She even has a fin that helps her go scuba diving—nothing can stop DeAnne when she sets her mind to something. Her energy is boundless, her courage unwavering.
Creativity on Wheels
Known around her community for her unbeatable door-decorating skills and show-stopping Halloween costumes, DeAnne turns her wheelchair into a canvas for imagination. Past costumes have included a firetruck and a bubble-bath scene—earning her both laughs and admiration.
Seeing the Bright Side
Even in casual conversations, DeAnne has a way of highlighting the good in every topic. Whether it’s a new community initiative, someone’s personal story, or a random act of kindness, she’s quick to point out the bright side and the people making a difference.
Advice for the Next Generation
DeAnne’s message to young people is simple but profound: “Never give up.” It’s a mantra she embodies in every facet of her life.
