“When you’re younger, you need to go on adventures when you don’t have anything holding you back,” says 83-year-old veteran Gary with a big smile. His face lights up as he shares his stories of sleeping under the stars, sailing the high seas, and globe-trotting escapades. As a self-proclaimed “big dipper kind of guy,” Gary’s love for the great outdoors has fueled a lifetime of unforgettable experiences.
Born and raised in Seattle, Gary’s passion for nature blossomed through his involvement in Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Sea Scouts. After being drafted and serving in the US Army, he pursued a degree in Sociology and Psychology at the University of Washington. But his true calling awaited him in his Capitol Hill garage, where he embarked on a new project—building a sailboat from scratch.
Gary’s adventures took him across the globe. He hitchhiked from Germany to Italy to Egypt, eventually making his way to South Africa. With excitement in his voice, he recounts narrow escapes from stalking panthers and close encounters with herds of elephants.
Returning to New York City with just $7 in his pocket, Gary made his way back to Seattle and spent the next seven years bringing his sailboat dream to life. Though his original plan to sail to New Zealand was derailed, he found great joy in exploring the San Juan Islands, where stunning scenery and new friendships awaited.
Throughout his journey, Gary’s motto has remained: “Why not?” It’s a philosophy he eagerly shares with younger generations, encouraging them to seize the day and chase their dreams.
